so commercial things are all well and good untill you start sharing things. remember "Dont copy that floppy", well things are pretty much the same these days. Remember sharing is theft or so they would have you believe. This is why we use open source/free alternatives. we can copy share and change things and make it better suited to ourselves and others. Therefore we own our computers and have the freedom to alter them without penalty.
What about extending this logic to other wares? well it is possible to live the open source lifestyle without johnny liable rearing his ugly head.

Raritan KV 'converted' into something useful?

I had two of these so i decided to strip out one of the cases to use for something.. a couple of years later I've used it. cosmetically Its not quite there. But I post it now anyway

I used an ATX tray to mount the board before fitting and cut out the rear, the blue button is from the original unit. the button had a pin connector already fitted so it was an obvious choice. this model of KV has a habit of wobbly buttons its not just my laziness. the harddrive is mounted to the lid above the pci slots. the clearances are just right. the board is an ECS k7sem board. it runs Linux and is used as my cheap and dirty file server. usb external hardrives can be stacked ontop to up the storage. it will never be a streaming media server but as a simple network file sharing server it works flawlessly.

Tidying
tidying is fun. especially when you are a hoarder like me. i have found all sorts of things. im not telling what ive found but soon there will be plenty of projects listed here im sure. and a few old ones that need work. Slim ATX pc and Gainclone Amplifier will be posted as soon as ive fished them out of the rubble. waiting with abaited breath im sure, eh folks?
Solid State Hard Drive
so you cant sleep and recently found those torx head drivers you thought you'd lost forever.
well what option is there but to take apart an old hard drive and have some fun with it. caffine fueled and sleep deprived ideas come that this would make an excellent little case for some geeky hack.
the drive to begin with and opened up with usb stick in place. top of usb stick removed for clearance purposes.
and yes I left the top casing of the usb stick in there. saves losing it eh !
so there you go. a 250meg drive reused in a quirky way. check out this link for more uses of your old drives
